Feb 4 and 5 – unfortunately, the sea was pretty rough for the two sea days we traveled to Sydney. We had pretty rough seas with some high rollers. I took a video to capture it but I can’t publish it in this blog. Despite wearing sea sick patches, I got an upset stomach so I stayed in our room most of these two days. It was a great reminder about the power of water. The ship has 15 levels, holds 3000 passengers and approx 1200 crew, and weighs 122,000 tons…..but the water had no problem moving it around.
The water depth in this part of the Pacific is about 15,000 ft deep. In fact, most of the deepest water on the planet is in the Pacific Ocean. On our first cruise, we were very close to the Tonga Trench which is the second deepest water on the planet. It’s hard to imagine water that’s approx. 6.7 miles deep.
We met some relatives of the ships 1st Officer, which led to us meeting him (Chandler), which led to him offering to give us a private tour of some of the areas that are normally off limits to passengers. I was too sick, but after a security check, Nancy got a great tour of the Bridge area, the engine control room, the ship’s kitchen area, and the laundry facilities. She really enjoyed the tour. I just continued praying for a faster arrival in Sydney!
Nancy didn’t like looking through the glass floor in the Bridge room…
Pictures from laundry and kitchen just weren’t that interesting. Nancy said it was the sheer scale and organization of the laundry and kitchen operations that was so impressive.
