Slow day at home

Sept 30, 2019 – Cape Cod

Today we planned to go back to Provincetown.  The weather was sunny, but the temperature was only going up to 60 in the afternoon, and the wind was blowing about 15 mph.  So, we decided to stay home today, and go back to Provincetown tomorrow (Tuesday) when the weather will be warmer. We finalized some future travel plans, and did a few more things around Alice. Nancy also took a bike ride to First Encounter Beach on the Cape Cod Bay near us, and spent part of the afternoon making a great dinner…….Honey Sesame Chicken over rice…..as usual, it was delicious!

The local news reported that another Great White shark was spotted yesterday(Sunday) near the beach in Wellfleet, which is the next town/beach up from Eastham where we are. A couple guys out boating were slowly cruising along near the beach when a great white started swimming beside them. And of course, one of them grabbed their phone and started recording!  Given all the news about the increase in the Great White population around Cape Cod,  I don’t think I’d be comfortable swimming here in the summer after the sharks arrive from their winter home down south. Just last summer, a neuroscientist from New York barely survived a Great White attack in Truro, which is a long beach area on the east coast of the upper Cape (very close to where we were yesterday at Race Point).  It’s a shame because the remote Cape Cod beaches are so clean and beautiful…..

One thing that has really struck me on this trip to the northeast part of the US and Canada is how old the buildings and towns are. It’s history from an earlier time as compared to “The West”.  Both equally impressive, but different. Last year out west it seemed like everything was fairly new.  Here, we saw towns founded in the 1600’s, and settlements established in the 1700’s. We saw lots of gravestones from the 1700’s.  Massachusetts is one of the thirteen original colonies so we know there’s a lot of history here to explore…..much more than we have time to see.

I’m not sure why, but since I retired, I have become much more interested in some things I paid little attention to in the past….things like geology, architecture, and early American history. Maybe it’s to replace the stimulation I used to get through my professional career….who knows?….but I enjoy pursuing those new interests…..and writing this blog!

And by the way, WE STILL HAVEN’T SEEN A MOOSE!

No pics today except a shot of a beach where Great Whites lurk…….I haven’t seen anyone swimming since we’ve been here….maybe walking along in ankle deep water, but not swimming. Smart people!
