Sept 29, 2019 – Cape Cod (Provincetown)
Today we made the short 20 mile drive north to the upper northeast tip of Cape Cod, and Provincetown. Most of the land from where we are north is part of the Cape Cod National Seashore NP……so it’s less populated and more desolate. Our first stop was Race Point, which is a beach area on the northeast tip of Cape Cod. Like all of the beaches in the Cape Cod National Seashore NP, the area was very desolate with large sand dunes. This is also one of the the area’s on Cape Cod that has become popular for Great White sharks. The area was even profiled in a 60 Minutes story this week. Massachusetts biologists are tagging them off the Cape Cod coast around Truro (same beaches we visited). One of the main reasons they are congregating off Cape Cod is the abundant food supply…..the seals that live around the Cape. In fact, as recently as late July, both Coast Guard Beach (where we went two days ago!) and Meadow Beach near Truro had to be closed after people saw a great white attacking and eating a seal! How cool would it be to see that in person while walking along the beach! How would I feel if I had been in the water!!?
I’m not usually too concerned about sharks in the water……but having been here and seen all of the warning signs, I think we’ll find somewhere else if we want to swim in the ocean! These signs are all around near the beaches on Cape Cod, along with strategically placed kits to treat heavy bleeding in case of a shark attack.
Race Point
Provincetown was really a cool town. It reminds of some other “socially diverse” populations in other places like Key West, Coconut Grove in Miami, and some of the other places where there is a collection of old hippies, starving artists, shops that should be condemned, and restaurants serving tofu, soybean burgers, organic soap, and sprouts! Oh well, to each his/her own. It’s a good thing…..these places have real entertainment value! But unfortunately we found lots of crowds on a beautiful Sunday afternoon (duh!) so we explored a mile long jetty on the far end of town and decided to come back Monday tor Tuesday to see the shops “up close and personal”.
We decided to walk across the bay on the man-made, over 1 mile long, jetty on the south end of Provincetown….
When Nancy got about 1/4 of the way across, she decided to go back. I wanted to go across so she said she’d wait for me on shore.
Unfortunately, its was high tide…….so at about the halfway point, there was a place where a couple places where you had two be willing to get your shoes/feet wet in order to go across. A guy was trying to coax his girlfriend to step on the rocks to cross but she wasn’t too interested! Given that problem, and Nancy waiting for me, I just decided to go back. Hopefully, we’ll get a chance to cross Monday to Tuesday when we go back to Provincetown.
The tiny Provincetown airport is located in the middle of the sand dunes between Race Point and Provincetown…..
