Sept 21, 2019 – Newport Naval Station, RI
Today we got things ready and moved another 100 miles south to the Carr Point RV Park at the Naval Station in Newport, RI. The Newport Naval Station is home to approx. 50 Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and US Army Reserve commands and missions. It’s the primary training facility for the all Navy officers and enlisted personnel, and is also home of the highly competitive Naval War College, an advanced training program designed to prepare the Navy’s best officers for senior leadership (the USAF has a similar War College in Washington DC). In terms of non-training missions, The Newport Naval Station is also heavily involved in the testing and evaluation of advanced undersea warfare and development systems. Like the AF base in Pensacola, they also have one heckuva nice marina!
The RV camp only has 6 LARGE sites in a big field on the water. I’m not sure why they don’t re-configure and expand it to accommodate more sites……it looks you could easily put 3x the number of sites here. Anyway, the sites are very spacious sites and back up to Narragansett Bay. Once we got here, we got setup and then had to drive to the base marina to checkin. It took 20 minutes to get there because it was Saturday and most gates are closed for the weekend……the main gate was on the other side of the base. On a week day, we could have gone through a gate near us and been there in 5 minutes……no biggie. We got a great site for the normal low cost of only $25 per night with, in this case, “almost full” hookups. This is one of the rare military spots where they don’t have sewer…..but we’re only here 3 days so we’ll manage just fine and dump at our next spot in Cape Cod.
I watched college football this afternoon. Since, we couldn’t get the Ohio State game 🙁 , I watched the FSU/Louisville game. After we saw that OSU was up by 25+ points over Miami of Ohio, Nancy took a bike ride around the campground before making dinner. I was glad to see Ohio State WIN BIG, while Michigan LOST BIG. The Michigan fans must really be frustrated…..they haven’t beat Ohio State since 2012. But were not bragging…..we don’t want to jinx ourselves!
Narragansett Bay is right behind our site….the view out our rear window is fantastic! New England its one heckuva nice place to be at this time of year.
The driveway into each site was 50 yards long…
