Sept 18, 2019 – York, Maine
Today, we drove to York, a small coastal resort town in southern Maine. It was a great choice…..York sits right on the Atlantic Ocean….not in some protected harbor area. On the southern end of town, York Village, the town had built up the shoreline to prevent flooding. Its also where the very well known Libby’s Campground is located. We stopped by to check it out and learned that Libby’s is still owned and operated by the same family that built it back in 1923 (the Davidsons). In fact, the guy at the front desk was a great grandson of the original owner. The RV resort sits right on the oceanfront. It used to be fully occupied by seasonal renters…..but it’s now about 1/2 seasonal and 1/2 transient weekly or monthly renters. It is quite pricey, but the view out our back window would be incredible! Nancy tried to get us in for a few days a few months ago but it was fully booked.

As we got closer to the town of York, the shoreline got a little higher and a lot rockier. The town actually is on a small peninsula. The coast was lined with beautiful coastal homes and cottages. The small downtown included a few restaurants, ice cream shops, souvenir shops, and other small stores. York is yet another one of those beautiful picturesque New England coastal vacation towns we have explored. It’s obvious that the town was much less populated at this time of year……we saw very few cars parked in the houses and cottages…..a lot of homes looked like they had been closed up for the season. We both had a great bowl of chowder for lunch at a great little oceanfront restaurant called the Sun & Surf. We went to check out the old Nubble lighthouse, and then headed home.
It was quite chilly on the coast with temps in the low 60’s….but the strong wind made it seem much colder. We wore light jackets and were still a little chilly walking around town. For the record, Maine stays quite a bit cooler in the summer. The hottest month of the year here in York in southern Maine is July where the avg. high/low is only 79 / 63. But while the wind made it chilly today, it was still a great weather day……we just didn’t properly dress for it.
