Sept 14 -16, 2019 – Wassamki Springs, ME
Sept 14 – The weather forecast called for a cloudy day today with some showers in early afternoon. So we decided to hang around Alice and the campground today. The campground has great spacing between sites, and very nice facilities…..I’d say it is definitely one of the nicest places we have stayed this trip.
There was an official AKC Dog Show here on the grounds this weekend so there were a lot of dogs around. This is a show dog competition. I don’t know a thing about dog shows….but I did find out that they were awarding “Best in Show” in 4 categories. There as also a dog sled pulling competition…..dogs are safely harnessed and attached to a wheeled cart…..then they pull on command from their owners. I didn’t stay long but I did see a dog pull 1000 pounds a certain distance. When I got home, I looked up dog sled pulling contests and learned that this kind of dog competition challenges dogs in different weight classes to pull a cart loaded with weight a distance of 16 ft. The dog has 60 seconds to get the cart and weight across the 16 ft. line. The winner is the dog that can drag the most weight across the 16 ft. line under 60 seconds. In 2017, a 150 pound Alaskan Malamute pulled a wheeled platform stacked with 5400 lbs of cinder blocks the required 16 ft. Amazing….
Nancy did 2 loads of laundry and I gave Alice a much needed wash. This is the first place we have been that allows car and RV washing on site so it was nice to finally be able to give it a good cleaning. It’s a big job that usually takes me about 3 hours when I do it myself. Its nice to see Alice clean again.
We also finally got HD tv service back today for all channels. I learned that the Dish’s auto mode aligns to western arc satellites, which don’t work well in the Northeast. All we had to do was manually override the system to lock on Channel 61, which is an eastern arc satellite to get a better signal for HD in the Northeast. It was a very easy process to make the change on the controller. Live and learn…..but only after a little pain!
We watched Ohio State trounce Indiana. They looked very impressive on both sides of the ball. We’ll be following them very closely again this year. Go Bucks!
One of my projects was cleaning Nancy’s bike.
Nancy’s two sons, Alex and Phil, are on a 10 day vacation in Thailand and Bali, Indonesia. Phil went with an Army buddy and Alex brought this girlfriend Danni. The picture below is a Snapchat message from Phil….they decided to try the toasted scorpion appetizer while they were in Bangkok. They said it was crispy with a chewy center. No thanks!
Sept 15 – We made a quick trip to the waterfront in Portland to walk a trail and see a lighthouse. Looks like a great water-side walking and biking path. Later, we watched a little football and had a very relaxing Sunday evening.
This is Fort Georges in the Portland Harbor area. Per Wikipedia, “Fort Gorges is a former United States military fort built on Hog Island Ledge in Casco Bay, Maine. Built from 1858 to 1864, no battles were fought there and no troops were stationed there. Advancing military technology, including iron clad ships and long range guns, made the fort obsolete before it could be used.”
On shore overlooking Ft Gorges is the Sedge Point Lighthouse and Fort Preble. The Sedge Point Lighthouse “marks a dangerous obstruction on the west side of the main shipping channel in.”
Fort Preble – According to Wikipedia, “Fort Preble was a military fort in South Portland, Maine, United States, built in 1808 and progressively added to through 1906. The fort was active during all major wars from the War of 1812 through World War II. The fort was deactivated in 1950….” (the fort is to the right of the Sedge Point Lighthouse jetty shown above)
Portland Harbor….yep, that’s a big cruise ship
Downtown
Sept 16 – today we drove from Portland, ME, to the Sea Coast Campground and RV Resort in North Hampton, NH. It was a short 1 hour drive and we got in to our site by 11:30am. We got a nice back-in spot which was no big deal except that the site was barely deep enough to handle Alice……we had to park the truck on another unused space. Nancy made a pork loin with homemade apple sauce, and beets. It was delicious!
Our site at Sea Coast in North Hampton, NH. This is about 4 miles to the beach. NH only has about 18 miles of oceanfront between Maine to the north, and Massachusetts to the south.
That’s all for now…..
