August 29, 2019 – The Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick
I checked Alice’s underbelly for water before we left Halifax and, once again, there was no water. So I screwed the underbelly back on and drove 4 hours in scattered showers and some heavy rain. I checked the underbelly again when we got here and there still is no water. We’ll just keep checking……..
Also, first thing this morning, I finally presented Nancy with her official marital hiking stick. I’m talking about a real genuine, Yellowstone pine, perfectly straight, de-barked, sanded smooth and polyurethaned hiking stick with a rubber foot to provide better grip, and to keep the stick from wearing out and splintering at the bottom. I made three of them but, of course, Nancy’s got extra attention! I hope we enjoy our walking sticks for many hikes to come!
After some coffee, we got ready for our move from Halifax to the Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick. We knew the weather report was calling for rain but we didn’t know until this morning that it was actually going to be a steady, hard rain starting later in the morning, and continuing off and on until late in the afternoon. We asked if we could keep our site for another night but it was already booked. Oh well……we buttoned up Alice and left at about 10:30am…..it had already started drizzling.
Thankfully, over 3/4’s of our trip miles were on a good four-lane, divided highway, which made the drive through the scattered rain showers a little easier. But make no mistake–driving a roughly 20,000 lb. fifth wheel big rig anytime requires a lot of concentration. But for me, driving in the rain requires another level of focus. Unfortunately, when we turned onto the last road for the last 25 miles to the Bay of Fundy, the rain really came down. And the road was a fairly narrow, bumpy, somewhat curvy, two lane road that had a lot of water on it, including some pooling. It wasn’t unsafe if you matched your speed to the conditions…….but it was definitely a little nerve-wracking. I just slowed down to well below the 45 mph speed limit, and concentrated. I tried not to worry about the few cars that stacked up behind me. I trust they understood why I had to slow down…..
Overall, we have really been lucky with the weather while traveling with Alice. But we have had more than our share of cloudy and/or rainy days in Canada. But we’re not complaining…..overall, we have had very few days where the weather kept us from doing something. But we agreed that today was clearly one of our worst weather travel days so far, especially having to drive Alice (she’s not a “mudder”)……
Once we got to our site at the Ponderosa Pines Campground, we did our setup up in a driving rainstorm (first time ever!).
- Driving to a great destination and setting up in nice weather…….PRICELESS!
- Driving to a great destination in the rain, and then driving the last 25 miles on a narrow, fairly bumpy, curvy road that was pooling water from heavy rain, and then setting up in the rain……NOT SO MUCH!
This our campground at 2:30pm. No fun setting up in the rain
We got wet, but we finally got inside Alice to dry off and warm up…..so all is good again……..and we’re excited to witness the huge tidal change at the Bay of Fundy!
UPDATE ON LEAK- I checked Alice’s underbelly for water before we left Halifax, and again after we got here after driving in rain. Once again, there was no water. We’ll just keep checking.
Here’s a couple pics from our Ponderosa Pines Campground at dusk after the rain stopped. The campground is right on the Bay of Fundy and the tide was near its low tide mark.
It’s supposed to be sunny and clear tomorrow, so she would get some great pictures of the Bay of Fundy and the tidal change!
