August 26, 2019 – Halifax
Today was a cloudy overcast day so we decided to stay close to home and run a few errands. BTW, both us made a full recovery from our ailments a couple days ago. I forgot to mention that in yesterdays post.
Nancy and I have not had Dish TV or cable for most of our time in Canada. So besides seeing the sights, we have been reading, sitting outside, and playing our new game addiction, Farkle. And its been fun! I like to watch a little tv at night, but we have done fine without it. But don’t get me wrong….I’m looking forward to getting back on HD locals and satellite when we get back into the US!
We did laundry and went to several stores today, including our first trip to a Costco since we left Dayton. We went to Costco for meat and fish but, as usual, we ended up picking up a few other things too.
I finished my homemade walking sticks and they came out great. I picked up two perfectly straight pine branches from a brush pile in Yellowstone last summer and have been carrying them around in the back of our truck ever since then. I also picked one up coming back from our hike in Lake Placid last month. So I carved and sanded the sticks, and put some polyurethane on them. Actually, they don’t look that great, but they are my own creation and they should be great, sturdy walking sticks (if we ever get old enough to need them of course! :>). They look great…..I plan to present Nancy’s Yellowstone hiking stick to her tomorrow. I hope we make it a tradition to use these for many hikes in the future. Maybe we can find a way to put a mark on each stick for every “qualified” hike we take e.g. hikes of 2 miles or more.
My friend Tim, who died recently, would have done much better…..he was a great wood carver. He was going to carve the sticks but I just never got around to giving them to him. But he is at least part of what motivated me to carve these walking sticks…..and I think he’d be happy with my first effort. Rest in peace Tim.
Tonight, we cooked up two of the filets we got from Costco. It’s been quite a while since we had a steak so we were both really looking forward to it. We marinated em’, grilled em’, and ate em”. along with a sweet potato, sautéed mushrooms, and broccoli…..everything was dang good!
After yesterday, it was nice to have a more relaxed day today. Until next time….
