More rain, then 4 states in 6 hours

10/17 and 10/18 2018 – Monroe, LA, to Pensacola, FL

Drove from Dallas to Monroe, LA on 10/17. It rained a lot and based on what we saw on the side of the road, I’m glad we stopped in Dallas and didn’t try to go further yesterday. The interstate was fine but the creeks and streams were very flooded, and grass and dirt on the sides of the road was saturated and soft. The area was really hammered with rain all day on Tuesday. We know because we saw several cars that had run off the road, spun around and kicked up a lot of mud and then settled in up to their axles. There were also a two bad traffic accidents on I-20, including a pretty bad tractor trailer accident where the trailer jack-knifed. These two accidents added about  1 1/2 hours to our trip…..so we didn’t get into our site until about 6pm. We didn’t even unhook since we were leaving first thing in the  morning for Pensacola.

Thursday morning (10/18) we got up early and headed to Pensacola. We were on the road by 9:30am. We were in 4 states enroute (Louisiana>Mississippi>Alabama>Florida). Thankfully, the weather had cleared up so it was a nice leisurely drive with no traffic.  We arrived at RV Resort at the Pensacola Naval Air Station at about 3:30pm.  It’s very nice resort with full service hookups on concrete pads. The property is right on the beach and dogs are allowed to run on the beach with no leash. The property also has a tiki bar. The beach is only about 100 yards from our RV site so I’m sure most days we will be having morning coffee on the beach! This is the second military RV facility we have used and both have been very nice. Nancy and I agree that if we travel on the road as much (or more) in the future, we will try to use more of these military facilities. Most have concrete pads and we also like the extra security they provide.

Another cool thing about this location is that it is the home base for the Blue Angels. They flew today before we arrived and someone we met at the RV park said they went to watch them practice. They figured it would be cool to see them in a crowd free environment….that, it turned out, was incorrect assumption. They said “there had to be 5000 people watching” from various authorized areas around the flight line. We plan to find out tomorrow when they will be flying again….if they fly again while we are here, we’ll definitely go watch it.

Nancy took Frisco to the beach for a walk/run, and I gave Alice a bath……. she had gotten particularly dirty from driving in rain on interstates.  That took until dusk so by then I was ready for dinner and a cocktail. As usual, Nancy cooked up something tasty……..leftover spaghetti.

The next few days we’re supposed to have very nice weather so I expect we will spend a lot of time at the beach (something we have not done since we left Ohio back on July 5th) and maybe try out our new paddleboards.
