10/15/2018 – Abilene to Dallas
We got up, checked to be sure we hadn’t sunk into ground overnight, and then got going by about 9:30am. Our plan was to move to Cedar Hill State Park southwest of Dallas and hang out for a couple days until the weather cleared. A trip that was supposed to take about an hour and a half turned in to 3 1/2 hours due to a slow gas stop and much slower traffic due to the steady rain. The streams and rivers we passed were all swollen beyond their banks. When we got to the Cedar Hill SP, it was still raining, and the park service had just evacuated the lakeside area due to the flooding……but they said it was fine at higher elevations in the park. We were assigned a site but when we got there, it was clearly too small (plus there was standing water in the entry area). We looked for other sites but soon agreed it was best to look for another RV park. Nancy found another nice one pretty quickly and we pulled into the Sun Resort at about 4pm. What we thought was going to be a easy day turned out to be anything but that.
I made a strong adult beverage and sat back in my chair to relax and de-compress. The traffic and rain, combined with the increased and extended concentration required when you are driving one of these big rigs, is really mentally exhausting. Later in the early evening, Nancy went over to the Mall to walk (raining outside) and then went to the grocery so she has the supplies to keep making great dinners!
Tomorrow we stay put for another day and explore around Dallas- it’s supposed to pour all day. We’ll decide about Wednesday after we check weather tomorrow afternoon. Here’s the weather prediction
