Sunshine, fog, rain and hail all in one day

We took advantage of the early sun to ride our bikes to downtown Canmore for breakfast at Graze Food & Drink. It was outstanding.  One thing Nancy and I have both really noticed is the attitude of the store clerks and other service people. Always polite and very sincere in their desire to help you. When Nancy asked our waiter where the best t-shirt store was, he walked us over to the front door about 2 blocks down the street just to be sure we went to the right place!

We did a little shopping before the fog rolled in and picked up some treats for Frisco. I also visited a fishing outfitter and got the inside scoop on the best “off the beaten path” trout fishing spots within 30 miles of here….there are lots of good choices but I plan to hike to Boom Lake on Friday to try my luck fly fishing for Cut Throat trout.

When the rain hit, we were checking out the Silver Tip Golf Club. I thought the Gleneagles course in Cochrane was very nice but this one is on another level. It looks incredibly beautiful. The golf course is laid out on the side of a mountain which means there are very substantial changes in elevation from hole to hole (and on individual holes). I plan to play Thursday and Nancy will ride along with me to provide moral support. We also looked at a few houses along the golf course and could not believe how much a small house of less than 2000 sq. ft costs when you have a view of the mountains…basically $1M and up.  I guess it makes sense you consider the view. These are big, steep mountains that are fairly close to the housing. We posted a few pics but, again , they just can’t depict the majesty and splendor of this setting. Just after we went inside the Silver Tip clubhouse, the rain picked up and it started hailing. If you were on the course, it would have been very difficult to stay dry. Most came pouring in to the clubhouse to wait it out. They were able to go back out in about 1/2 hour. Nancy and I split a beer and some calamari and left to go back to Canmore.

I also plan to play the Fairmont Banff course early next week. It’s another Top 10 course in Canada. I am truly amazed at the quality and beauty of the golf courses here in Alberta.  I realize we have over used these words, but the best term to describe the golf courses and most everything else we have seen in Canada is “stunningly beautiful’. I’m sure part of the reason is the lack any really hot weather (with rare exceptions). Everything is just so green. Today, the temps were in the high 50’s to low 60’s.

Although we are a little disappointed in our RV site, we’re both glad to be staying in this area for 10 days. This is a very cool town that has become the place to go for the money folks from Calgary. It kind of reminds me of Vail or Estes Park, CO, in the US.

Nancy made one of my favorite meals for dinner…….spaghetti with meat sauce and garlic bread. Sooooo good after an active day!
